Situated as it is in Northern Mindanao, Cagayan de Oro is the gateway to the second-largest island in the Philippines and one of its main economic hubs. The city, whose name literally means “River of Gold”, is part of the larger Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro area, which is composed of one other city and eight towns.

CDO is considered a highly urbanized city, yet its population of around 700,000 makes it just the tenth most populous city in the country and is far from overcrowded. Because of its strategic location, CDO is home to several multinational companies from big industries such as automotive, manufacturing and business process outsourcing. It also has its share of numerous homegrown industries, which help spur economic growth in the area.

Business and pleasure

But Cagayan de Oro isn’t just about business and manufacturing. Around a third of CDO’s land area is devoted to agricultural use to produce crops for both food and commercial use. Livestock and poultry are also produced in abundance.

CDO is know for its whitewater rafting activities (

Cagayan de Oro’s variety of tourist spots and attractions make it an ideal vacation spot. A popular activity for thrill seekers is whitewater rafting where you can shoot the rapids in the Cagayan de Oro River. For those seeking another form of nature tripping, the Mapawa Nature Park lets you go horseback-riding, rappelling, or zooming down a zipline.

There is also the Macahumbus Cave, which serves as a reminder of the Battle of Macahumbus where Filipinos defeated American troops in 1900 at the height of the Philippine-American War. In August the city comes alive with the weeklong Higalaay Festival, which celebrates CDO’s patron saint St. Augustine.
